Miami-based Burger King is rolling out new restaurant designs.

Parent company Restaurant Brands International, which also owns Popeyes and Tim Hortons, unveiled the new model for its restaurants and said Miami will be among the first markets to see the new design.

The reimagined restaurants will offer five different types of food pick-up methods, as well as a three-lane drive-through.  The company aims to complete the first restaurants with this model in 2021.

“Our in-house design and tech team accelerated new restaurant design plans and pushed the limits of what a Burger King restaurant could be,” said RBI’s chief operating officer. “We took into consideration how consumer behaviors are changing and our guests will want to interact with our restaurants. The result is a new design concept that is attractive to guests and will allow our franchisees to maximize their return.”

The new design capitalizes on trends accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, including various off-premises delivery options.

The biggest change will be the three lane drive-thru. The third lane, which will only be available at select locations, would be dedicated for third-party delivery drivers. Each of the lanes are contactless.

Extending above the drive through lanes would be the restaurant’s second-floor dining room. By going vertical, the company said aims to condense the overall footprint of future locations.

Burger King’s statement said the new design occupies 60% less space than a traditional restaurant.  This new design also offers dedicated curbside pick-up parking spaces.

Burger King’s announcement comes after a shaky third quarter for the brand. RBI reported third quarter sales at Burger King were down 7.9% compared to the same period in 2019.

Meanwhile, Popeyes continues to have sales growth, even more than a year removed from the launch of its chicken sandwiches. Popeyes sales were up 21.5% from the third quarter of last year.
