Sell for More News is a weekly blog series with interesting information from the world of commercial real estate.

Amazon’s multimillion-square-foot fulfillment centers are growing taller and getting closer to big cities.

Plans for four-story, 2.5 million-square-foot warehouses have appeared at Amazon sites in Spokane, Milwaukee, Minnesota, California and North Carolina in recent months.

Amazon patents have envisioned urban, robotized towers that could automate order fulfillment to cut costs and delivery times.

Their fulfillment centers have evolved from sprawling, single-story warehouses to four-story facilities like the one in Kent, Washington, whose ground floor is about 800,000 square feet.

The highly-robotized Kent fulfillment center was Amazon’s first facility to move more than 1 million products out the door in a single day.
