Sell for More Trivia: What are the busiest airports in the US?

Published on March 3rd, 2019

Sell for More Trivia is a weekly blog series that playfully presents a trivia question about commercial real estate.

It’s no secret that large employers often require close proximity to an international airport.  So it’s wise to have a general understanding of the major airports in each commercial real estate market.

Today let’s discuss the five busiest airports in the country.

O’Hare International Airport comes in at #1.  Followed by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.  These two airports have traded bragging rights for much of the past two decades.  Chicago just snatched the crown of busiest airport back from Atlanta at a time when both cities are investing billions of dollars in airport modernization projects that will likely lead to even more expansion.

This past year arrivals and departures at O’Hare jumped 4.2% while in Atlanta flights climbed just 1.8%.  Chicago’s other major airport, Midway International, saw its arrivals and departures dip 3.2%.  Midway, which is located on the city’s southwest side, is ranked #26 on the list of busiest U.S. airports.

To round out the top five we have Los Angeles International or LAX at #3, Dallas-Fort Worth International at #4 and (maybe surprisingly) Denver International at #5.

Other airports of interest include Orlando (MCO) at #12, Miami (MIA) at #14, Fort Lauderdale (FLL) at #19, Nashville (BNA) at #33 and Milwaukee (MKE) at #54.
